ILEA Auditorium

On June 13, 2017, ILEA Budapest Director Susan Ostrobinski provided opening remarks at the Women’s Networking Salon (WNS), an embassy event hosted at the ILEA to discuss the opportunities and challenges for women pursuing a career in law enforcement.  The WNS was started by Embassy Budapest to expand Post’s work on advancing gender equality in Hungary.  The WNS convenes a diverse field of professionals in Hungary from across disciplines to discuss, raise awareness, and encourage action on women’s issues such as domestic violence and political participation.  Approximately 35 people attended the panel discussion, which featured a three-person panel which included officers from the United States’ Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security, the Hungarian Riot Police, and the Hungarian Counter Terrorism Center.  The panelists discussed their own career paths; the unique perspectives and skills women bring to a law enforcement team; the challenges of earning the respect of male colleagues and finding a work-life balance; and the demographic changes of the respective law enforcement organizations observed since embarking on their careers.
